Johann Adolph Hasse

25 March 1699, Bergedorf - 16 December 1783, Venice
An 18thC German composer, singer and teacher of music. Immensely popular in his time, Hasse was best known for his prolific operatic output, and was a pivotal figure in the development of opera seria and 18th-century music in general.
The Hasse Project website is collaborative and features the work of a number of international researchers and performers. Over time we hope to add to the information available on this fascinating composer and invite you to contribute to the available editions, biographies, articles and discussions.

Johann Adolph Hasse Il Sassone (1699 - 1783) was for a number of decades the most prolific and popular composers of opera seria in Italy and German-speaking countries. He was '...a German with the musical passions of an Italian...' A close association with Metastasio and a series of important positions in the musical world meant that his works were presented in an appropriate manner in some of the major theatres of the time from London through Italy and Germany to Vienna.

The Hasse Project plans to make more of his music available through invaluable access to both autograph and copy scores of Hasse's works.

The emphasis will be on his vocal works, initially cantatas and arias, but hopefully we will include some of his major works at a later date.

STOP PRESS!! The edition count at the Hasse Project has just reached 19 with the addition of James Sanderson's edition of Hasse's continuo cantata Oh Dio partir conviene for alto & continuo:

A classic lontananza cantata with great pathos. RARA format and filled with plangent melody and extraordinary harmonic shifts in the recitatives. Mirzia is our heroine and her erstwhile lover is forced to be separated from her. Oh, the anguish!!
